Laddan Mallee Kids

Thanks Amanda (left) with Belinda and Bianca.

A couple years ago when I was doing some volunteer work for National Premmie Day,  I was given a couple of these plants from Amanda who was then the president of Loddon Mallee Kids.  July marks the anniversary of my gorgeous premmie baby girls Lara and Victoria  and so it has extreme significance to me this rose.  It will be 9 years this year, I just cannot believe it.

Since having planted it, The Children’s Rose looks beautiful and has grown beautifully and its a very special way to remember my precious premature baby girls all 3 of them, but also reminds me of my beautiful friend  Amanda who gave them to me.    I will always remember her kindness ….

Parool from Victoria, Nominee

Parool – Victoria In 2003 Parool had a premature baby boy & at the time there was no support available to parents. Parool decided she had to change this so in 2005 together with 5 other premmie mums they started the charity Lifes Little Treasures of which she is now president and played a major role is forming the Premmie Foundation. She works tirelessly to provide the support network that families require on leaving hospital & most importantly strives to create awareness amongst the community.

Over the years she has made many personal sacrifices because what LLT stands for was so important to her & her beliefs. If she not on the phone she on the email 24/7, always working even on holidays!. Her ultimate wish is to provide information, support and encouragement to families with premature babies, empowering them to achieve the best outcomes for their children. She is always available when needed by a family & will do everything in her power to assist them.  She has a dream and is well on the way to fulfilling it. She’ll never take no for an answer! we are blessed to have her on our side…

Stephanie from Queensland, NomineeStephanie – Queensland Stephanie & her identical twin sister were born at 31 weeks gestation in 1996 and spent 6 weeks in hospital. From the age of 12 months until 5 years of age Stephanie suffered from numerous hospital admissions due to breathing difficulties and allergies. During this time she was desperately underweight and always looked unwell. Finally at aged 5, two ENT (ear, nose and throat) operations helped her to overcome her problems and since that time she has never looked back. From that time on she has taken every opportunity to enjoy life, be involved in numerous sports and to help other community members. Stephanie is now aged nearly 14 and is an athletic, healthy teenager. In 2007 aged 11, Stephanie decided she needed to do something to help other premature babies. She signed up to fundraise for the Mater Mothers’ Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Since that day Stephanie has worked over 100 hours annually to fundraise for the unit and done so much more. Without corporate contacts her fundraising has been through an enormous amount of time and effort.

To date Stephanie has raised $15,000 for the NICU and also highlighted and promoted the work carried out by the unit and the need for fundraising to be carried out for the hospital. This has been through numerous newspaper and magazine articles and web site information. She was the premature baby who is now helping other premature babies and their families.

Nola from Western AustraliaNola – Western Australia Nola is the grandmother to little Gemma born at 30 weeks gestation weighing 920 grams (a surviving twin). Nola lives in Western Australia and was nominated by her daughter. Since her grand daughter was 4 weeks old Nola has been sewing humidy crib covers, matching bags, peanut pillows and clothes for premmie and tiny babies and donating them to the King Edward Memorial Hospital in WA with all material funded by herself and a few lovely friends. She also takes in regular updates and photo’s of Gemma into the hospital to help give others hope at the end of the sometimes long and very daunting tunnel. Nola has been a rock for her daughter and the many families with babies in the King Edward Memorial Hospital who are the lucky recipients of her good will and love for our precious premature babies.

Dr Cartwright – Queensland  Dr Cartwright goes above and beyond his role in NICU/SCN at the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital. Dr Cartwright basically never goes home, he is there early to late EVERY day, he rarely takes weekends off and when he is on holidays he rings in to ask about his patients. In fact he’s been known to ring in during the early hours of the morning at other times. He has rung his patients mobiles on many occasions post NICU to check on how their children are going and always makes sure that he does follow up appointments himself. He is also very involved if not the driving force behind a lot of research and development in the premature baby world. He has written textbooks and other publications on the care of extremely premature babies which is insightful to parents of prems.

congratulations to all the nominees so far… there are still more to come.  Each one of these “hero’s” are amazing in their help and assistance to babies and famileies of premature babies.

Below… Earlybirds sleep nest and Tummybear Premature baby keepsake doll.  These dolls are custom made to the size and weight of your own baby.  La Toriana are proud to be able to provide familes of premmie babies a choie in gorgeous clothing, toys and accessories.

Local Premmie Hero Awards 2009

Do you know a “Local Premmie Hero”?

lil aussie prem logo

L’il Aussie Prems website seeks nominations for Australia’s first award recognising the work of volunteers within the premature baby community.

Every year in Australia, thousands of babies are born prematurely. Their families ride a rollercoaster of emotions as they watch their children fight to overcome the health and developmental issues facing them as a result of their early arrival. These issues continue long after the babies are discharged from hospital.

L’il Aussie Prems (LAP), an online support site for families of premature babies, is proud to sponsor Australia’s first award to recognise and celebrate the dedication of individual volunteers within the local premature baby community.

LAP is seeking nominations from around Australia of “local premmie heroes” – the ordinary yet extraordinary people who give up their time to support the families of premature babies both during their hospital stay and afterwards, doing everything from sewing tiny clothing for very low birth weight babies to setting up local playgroups for prematurely born children to organising fundraising for research into the causes of premature birth.

“As a community of parents, we understand the premmie journey and how hard the road can be. We want to recognise and pay tribute to those people who go out of their way to make things easier for other families travelling that road.” said Julia Toivonen, founder of the L’il Aussie Prems website and mother of two premature babies.

Premature Baby

Nominations of local premmie heroes can be made via the L’il Aussie Prems website at http://www.lilaussieprems.com.au/hero/ Nominees do not need to have any premature children of their own. Nominations will close on 30 April 2009 and details of the winners will be announced in May.

La Toriana is proud to be associated with this award as a sponsor, and also as a judge.  Please support premmie babiess, families of premmie babies, and so please nominate someone you know who is deserving of this award.

If you are looking for stylish premmie baby clothes for your premmie baby or as a premmie baby gift for a newborn, visit La Toriana premmie section to view a wide range of clothing and accessories for premmie babies.  10% from all purchases in the la Toriana Premmie baby section goes to non profit organiseations for premmie babies.

Kids In Style ~ Earlybirds

Premmie Baby Clothing

It was wonderful to catch up with Lynda at Kids In Style in Melb recently.

As many of you know I am passionate about Premmie Babies, and love stocking Premmie baby clothes online at La Toriana.  It was lovely to actually meet Lynda who is like minded about Premmie babies as I am.

We chatted like long lost friends and talked about our journeys and the rollercoaster ride of having a prem baby.  As many of you are also aware, I am passionate about organic clothing, especially organic baby and kids clothing.  When Lynda introduced her new release of ORGANIC premmie baby clothes at the Kids In Style fair,  I was estatic!

Above are just a couple pics to give you a glimpse of whats to come… and very affordable too! I love the design and is in keeping with her current range.

Lynda, who found it hard after her son Jackson was born prem, finding premmie baby clothes that would fit, had an idea.  She developed a range of clothing that would fit premmie and small babies.  Earlybirds was founded.  She sourced the highest qulaity fabrics and was tested thoroughly.  You can be well assured with this product range.

I spoke with Lynda about thie new organic Premmie collection.

“The organic range was developed to offer choice to customers.   It is a unisex range made from 100% certified organic cotton.   The range includes, Bodysuit (long and short sleeve), Jumpsuit, Jacket, Pants with feet, T-shirt, wrap, booties, hat, sleeping bag and sleeping nest.  It will be available at the end of October.”  says Linda, founder of Earlybirds.Early Birds Owner, LyndaLynda with her son Jackson who was  her 10 weeks “earlybird”.

To view the current selection of Earlybirds available click here.

We are really looking forward to see this beautiful range of Organic Premmie clothing…. we are sure you will to!

Premmie Baby Celebration, National Premmie Day 2008

Premature babies are very special and anyone who has gone through the experience of having a prem baby or knows of someone who has… it can be  hard road to travel.

Friday marks National Premmie Day,

and we are here to help celebrate all premature babies, their families, the specialists who care for them and the wponderful support that is available.

At La Toriana we have just opened our Premmie section and invite you all to come and celebrate with us.  It has been so hard to find quality premmie clothing, toys and accessories.  Did you know until even recently, mums of prem babies actually were told to buy cabbage patch clothes from toy stores as that was the only clothes that would fit?  Its true.

Thank goodness times are changing, and you can actually get some lovely premmie baby clothes.

La Toriana will continue to source quality prem clothing for premature babies with an emphasis on quality, comfort and ease of dressing.

Check out the premmie dolls made by TUMMY BEAR.  It is a life like doll that you can have made to the size and weight of your prem baby as a reminder of the journey you travelled.

Premmie Dolls From La Toriana

We also have a great Cuski comforter that is a proven settling product for prem babies through to toddlers.

Early Birds premmie baby clothing is a highly renowned business supporting prem babies.  The softness and style that makes it easy to dress also has a unique style factor.

Coming soon is Teeny Weeny prem baby wear; a hip and funky prem baby clothing range that you all will be amazed at the quality and the price. Now prem babies can also have style and colour.

La Toriana will also be the first to showcase and stock an organic prem baby clothing range that is stylish and hip as well as functional and eco friendly.  An Australian business mum who has seen the hardship of finding nice, quality and stylish prem baby clothing,  is soon to release this beautiful and calming range.  This savy and innovative mum has a flair for design and empathy for all going through the rollercoaster of a journey with a premature baby.

I have been lucky enough to work with her through setting up this range and am so in love with the design… its absolutely gorgeous!  I can’t wait to show you all.  But I am keeping “mums the word” for a few more weeks til they are ready.

We are always looking for prem baby products so if you have any suggestions at all… please email me  info@latoriana.com.au

Volunteers Supporting Premature Babies

I wanted to tell you about the wonderful work many volunteers in our community have been doing.

Yesterday, many braved the cool, wintery weather, away from family and friends to help out with suport of Loddon Mallee Kids (LMK), to help increase awareness about the wonderful support available locally for families who have had a premmie baby, and also to spread the word about National Premmie Day next week.

We never hear much about the people “behind the scenes”.  The people, whom without, there would not be the strength of the non profit group like Loddon Mallee Kids. I would like to introduce the “real faces, the real people” who are doing amazing volunteer work.

These wonderful ladies below did a tremendous job chatting to many people in the BENDIGO Marketplace yesterday.  I was so amazed at the wonderful attitude of the Bendigo community, many whom bought pens, keyrings, raffle tickets and Roses.  Many people after being told what LMK and National Premmie Day was about, and listened to what these wonderful women were trying to do in our community didnt want to buy anything, but gave money without a word. $10, $5  was common, and most who did buy something gave their change back as a donation.  What generaous and spirited people.

Most of all I was in awe of these amazing ladies below who tirelessly chatted to so many people all day long.  Their committment, dedication and true desire to help shone through and the day was a success.

Amanda, LMK Secretary (left in the first pic) holds the “Childrens Rose” which is part of this years fund raising with the National Premmie Foundation.  Belinda, Playgroup and Newsletter coordinator , holds  a Tummy Bear Prem baby doll that can be made to the size of your own prem baby.  Bianca, the amazing President of Loddon Mallee Kids organised the day beautifully, thats her in the red cardigan.

Prem Baby Supporters

The second picture shows Bianca, Zoe (founder of Tummy Bear) and the creator of all the prem dolls you see in the pictures,  Angela, Bendigo Health rep, Belinda, and Nicole on the end who is the Loddon Mallee Kids Teasurer.  Well done ladies,  an excellent team effort yesterday!

LMK aims to provide support and information to families and carers of prematurely born or seriously ill infants and children.

LMK offers health professional and support agency links and contatcts when appropriate.

The work done by these, and other members of Loddon Mallee  Kids is done all voluntarily and in view of helping other families in our community have support and guidence where needed. They are all to be commended for their hard work.

Please, if you would like to help a non profit organisation, please check out the Loddon Mallee Kids website to learn more.

Remember National Premmie Day is July 25th.   Please visit www.prembaby.org.au to know more, and check out Loddon Mallee Kids

Birth of a Premature Baby…

La Toriana launches Prem baby catagory for National Premmie Day

La Toriana has been passionate about supporting Premature Babies.

July 25th marks 2008 National Premmie Day.

Elizabeth, founder of La Toriana  www.LaToriana.com.au ,  who has had 3 prem babies, is an keen supporter of National Premmie Foundationwww.prembaby.org.au and also her local group, Loddon Mallee Kids   www.loddonmalleekids.org.au

It is a hard road for many families experiencing the birth of a prem baby, and a rollercoaster ride for sometime afterwards.  There are some amazing supports out there these days like the above groups and websites such as www.momentbymoment.com.au , that are all about helping families and friends who are touched by the birth of a premature baby.

La Toriana have released this week their premmie section.  It is hard finding prem baby clothes and  accessories.  La Toriana would love you to check out their prem baby clothing lines and some new releases coming very soon in organic premature baby clothing.

Having a baby is an amazing, joyous occasion.

Friends, family, neighbours and acquaintances all gather around sending congratulatory cards, flowers, gifts. They all can’t wait to visit the new baby, have a hold and pat dad on the back, go out for that celebratory drink and give the mum a warm hug and flowers. Everyone is happy and knows how to react.

Is it the same when a baby is born premature? No, not always.

It’s a very frightening time for the parents whose baby comes too early or is sick. The joy soon turns to fear and panic and so sets in a rollercoaster ride. Every single minute is precious. It’s an extremely worrying time.  It’s a very isolating time for the parents. There is a fear they may loose their baby, may have long term health issues or concerns of being able to cope. Of guilt, anger and fear.

Friends and family are often feeling at a loss too.
Many will not send a congratulatory card or present, just in case the baby passes away and it could upset the parents. Many will *wait* and see how things go before they send a card. Sometimes this could be a couple months later.

Tips for supporting a friend/family with a prem/sick baby

  • Do send a card, present soon after if that’s what you had intended on doing, to congratulate the arrival of their much loved baby
  • Do knowledge it’s a stressful time
  • Offer positive feedback on the baby, their name, pics etc
  • Give them a journal to write their journey at this time, a book of comfort or similar gift
  • Do keep in touch, via a quick call, text, email or letter during their time in hospital to let them know you are thinking of them, even though they possible wont be up to returning calls etc for a while
  • Offers of help at home, with other kids, animals, work, where you can during this time.
  • Drop over frozen meals for the dad/family or once they get home from hospital
  • Give mum a special notebook so she can diarise her journey through this time.
  • Offer to do washing, shopping etc so its one less thing mum or dad needs to think about
  • Offer to pass on info to other friends/family for them
  • Do be there to listen and offer comfort
  • Please don’t offer parenting advise, your experiences, pry or pass judgement (its hard enough for the parents… no matter how well meaning you are)
  • Please don’t be self cantered and think of YOUR feelings on the situation,

Today there is so much more support available locally and nationally. As a parent, or friend of someone who has had a prem baby, there is a lot of support.

mumzone has an amazing amount of support and information for all mums.

La Toriana is giving the National Premmie Foundation 10% of all sales from July 15th to July 25th.  We are also giving you another 10% off too, type NPF as the code at checkout to automatically receive this.
